According to experts, people who have desk-based jobs, should stand and have light activities up to four hours a day. Also, they should walk as often as they can. This announcement has come from Active Working CIC and Public Health England. Sitting all day has been linked to health problems, especially with the back issues. Until now, there was no information how long those people should be on their feet during a day. There shall be more studies in order to determine the exact time people must stand or do light activities, but for now, from 2 to 4 hours are enough.
Office workers in the UK spend 75% of their working hours sitting. Also, long-standing should be avoided. This was proved by several studies, conducted in the UK, Australia and U.S. Authors of these studies said that employers can help their employees by changing the time of breaks, and adopting new designs that can enable them to work while they are on their feet.
According to Dr. Sebastien Chastin from the Glasgow Caledonian University, people who sit too much, have poor bone health and they have a higher risk of certain cancers, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Sitting is also linked to chronic disease.
Exercising can solve all these problems, but still, many people don’t exercise. Standing and light activity is useful. It is also easier than exercising, so more people should do this. In order to protect your health from aforementioned conditions and diseases, you should stand and have light activity during your working hours. In addition, walking to your job and walking home can be useful. In fact, any time of physical activity is useful.
